Drenthe is the place where the countryside was populated by hunters and Neanderthals roughly sixty thousand years ago. The clans of the megalithic gravestone builders lived here, four millenniums before Christ (B.C.), the first farmers in Drenthe. These farmers built the impressive Stone Grave monuments (megalithic gravestones) and the remains of these can still be admired nowadays in the Drenthse landscape. Those more culturally inclined can indulge to their heart’s content in one of the four museums in Drenthe (Prison museum Veenhuizen, Megalithic Tomb Visitor Centre, Drents Museum and Memorial Centre Westerbork).
