Megalithic gravestones are made from heavy boulders. They are called ‘roaming boulders’ and the heaviest weighs more than 40 tonnes. They are in the soil throughout the whole of North Netherland, but the majority are in Drenthe. These stones arrived in the Netherlands during the Ice Age, approximately 150,000 years ago, from Finland and South-Sweden. You encounter the megalithic gravestones everywhere, during a walk in the woods, through the heather or even in the middle of a village.
Visit the Megalithic Tomb Visitor Centre for more information about megalithic gravestones.
